There's much to see here. I am passionate about our community, our kids and the value we place on public education, especially in a District so well funded as ours, we place high expectations on the quality of education our students receive. I am active in our District and standing up for our parents and with our parents for issues that matter. Join me!
As part of a Teacher Support Initiative during my 2021/22 Presidency, we did quarterly events for the staff. Spring brought sunflowers with a note reminding teachers how they were "key" to LBHS.
I ran book swap for 7 years at Thurston and TOW. One of my favortie events, we traded over 25,000 books through the years amongst the students, and then back out to the community and with shelters, low income school districts and Friends of the Library locations in the Newport/Laguna Beach/ Dana Point area.
Parents were incensed when the District proposed exploring a 4 x 4 option at the High school after the COVID year when students at the secondary school were unable to attend in person until April 2021 and with only two classes per trimester. Some students in Thurston had PE and a language and ended at 1:00. Not a robust schedule. This is the second protest in so many years.
New ideas and fresh energy is needed on our Board. Current Board President Vickers has been on the Board for 36 years and has been Board President for 6 of the last 10 years, ignoring the Bylaws that state Board President rotation. Those Bylaws were changed to support staying as Board president. We need implement change as our needs have changed. As more of our staff are from out of town, we need stronger representation from our Board with strong govenance and oversight.
Take a moment and listen to my comments. I have followed the Board and Administration for over 14 years. I understand how they operate. I predicted this and less than 365 days later, the District shoved a comprehensive plan down the City's throat with full expectation of approval and financial support.
March 21, 2023 - City Council meeting four days after parents of enrolled students received notice from District about the Facilities Master Plan that included a $150 million dollar re-development of a four city block section of the high school. It was quickly apparent that no one in the community had been notified except for a handful of select people in an effort to have them align with the Districts desires.
Initial presentation to the neighborhood and community of the Facilities Master Plan which included a massive four block redevelopement plan of the District offices, parking lot, Aquatic Center and tennis courts at a cost of $150 million dollars to the citizens of Laguna Beach.
March 14, 2024- School board meeting commenting on the Board's unwillingness to compromise or collaborate with the City Council or Community's requests for pool facitilies features that would serve the community. The city has been a 70% partner for over 30 years.
